UIF (Unemployment Insurance)

UIF basics: what it is and who it's for

How the fund works, who contributes, and who is and isn't covered.

The UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is not a tax or a lost deduction — it's a safety net you've already paid into through your work. It gives short-term financial relief to workers who lose their income through circumstances beyond their control, such as retrenchment, illness, or maternity leave.

Who contributes, and how much

Contributor Percentage Description
Employee 1% Deducted directly from your monthly gross salary.
Employer 1% Paid by the employer on your behalf.
Total 2% The total monthly contribution sent to the fund.

Salary ceiling: contributions and benefits are capped at a monthly salary of R17,712. Even if you earn R50,000, your deduction is capped at R177.12, and your benefits are calculated using the R17,712 ceiling, not your actual salary.
