Lost your phone? How to update your cellphone number

You cannot do this online alone — here is the safe way to update your number.

SASSA sends a One-Time PIN (OTP) to your registered cellphone number every time you log in, submit an appeal, or change your banking details. If you lose your phone, lose your SIM, or change your number, you will not be able to receive that OTP.

For your safety, you cannot change a lost phone number online by yourself. This stops scammers from stealing your grant.

Option 1: Call the SASSA helpline

  1. Call 0800 60 10 11 from your new phone.
  2. Tell the agent you lost your old registered number and need to update it.
  3. Answer their security questions (your 13-digit ID number, full names, and other registration details) to prove you are the grant holder.
  4. Once they confirm your identity, they will update your number in the system.

Option 2: Visit a physical SASSA office

  1. Find your nearest SASSA office.
  2. Bring your original 13-digit South African ID (Green ID Book or Smart ID Card).
  3. Tell the officer at the counter you need to change your registered cellphone number.
  4. They will verify your identity, take your fingerprints or photo if needed, and update your number.

Once updated, the change is immediate. You will get all future OTPs, status updates, and store collection codes on your new number. Keep it up to date so you never miss a mandatory review or face scan.
