Rules worth knowing
- A caregiver can apply for the Child Support Grant for a maximum of 6 non-biological children.
- For the Foster Child Grant, your own income and assets are not checked at all.
- A foster parent caring for a severely disabled child can receive both the Foster Child Grant and the Care Dependency Grant for that child.
- You cannot combine most grants for yourself — but the Grant-in-Aid is a top-up on top of your own grant.
- If you go into a state-run care home or hospital for longer than 4 months, your Older Persons, Disability, or War Veterans grant is reduced to 25% of the full amount. It goes back to normal as soon as you leave.
See "Income and savings limits (the means test)" in the Money section to check if you qualify.
