SASSA and National Treasury run regular checks to make sure only qualifying people keep receiving grants. This can affect both the SRD grant and permanent grants.
SRD: monthly bank checks
Every month, SASSA's system re-checks your bank balance and transactions. If it sees your balance went over R624, your status can flip from "Approved" to "Declined" the next month — even if you were approved before.
Permanent grants: reviews and flagged accounts
- Older Persons and Disability grants can be flagged for review because of a suspected change in your financial situation, a newly registered asset, or to confirm you're still alive.
- If flagged, your payment is moved to the "Fourth Payment Day" of the month, instead of your usual pay day.
- You'll need to visit a local SASSA office with updated financial documents, declare your income, or do an eLife face scan to keep your grant active.
Ignoring a flagged review can lead to your grant being suspended, so respond as soon as you're asked.
Restoring a lapsed grant
If you don't collect your grant for 3 months in a row, it lapses (stops automatically).
- Visit your nearest SASSA branch within 90 days of the suspension.
- Bring your ID and proof that you still qualify for the grant.
- If approved, SASSA pays you back-pay for the months you missed since the suspension.
